Kenya AA Rianjagi
Kenyan coffees are known for their complexity and uniqueness. Our new offering from the Rianjagi Cooperative Society in Kenya’s Embu region showcases this terroir with exciting citrus and floral sips.
Don’t let these fruit-forward tasting notes fool you, this is a fully washed coffee. The coffee cherries are picked at their ripest and delivered within 24 hours to the station. There, the coffee still in its parchment layer, undergoes fermentation before being laid out to dry. The coffee dries on either raised beds in the sun or in a covered solar dryer. Here the coffee is rotated and sorted until it reaches the correct moisture level for export. Rianjagi even has an eco-pulper that minimizes water usage during the coffee washing process.
The Rianjagi coffee factory is located in Embu County on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. Rianjagi, along with Nyeri and Kirinyaga, are the three coffee-growing regions that form Kenya’s famous coffee belt. Opened in 1976, the Rianjagi coffee factory receives coffee from over 2,500 farmers in the area. Fun Fact: A majority of the Rianjagi Cooperative Society’s members are women.
The AA in the name of this coffee refers to the size of the beans; you'll notice they are quite large. Kenya has its own grading system for coffee, so you might see AA, AB, or even PB (for peaberry) depending on the coffee. We are tasting a lot of grapefruit and lemony citrus notes in these first few roasts, though I have a feeling this coffee will open up and reveal even more a few days post-roast.
